Prisoner abuse in Fiji: Mara

A former Fijian military commander now in exile says he can confirm allegations of prisoner abuse at the Fiji Military Forces barracks in Nabua, just outside Suva city.

Fiji is currently trying to extradite Lieutenant-Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara from Tonga, to face charges of sedition and mutiny.

Human rights groups have repeatedly alleged the military regime detains and tortures political prisoners at the Queen Elizabeth military barracks.

Ratu Tevita told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat programme those claims were true.

He said: "There have been allegations. There has been ill treatment of people, still now."

"Even members of my family have been taken up. Yes I can confirm there's been ill treatment conducted by the military."
