Commodore Esala Teleni has resigned as Fiji’s Police Commissioner.

Permanent secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister Colonel Pio Tikoduadua confirmed that Teleni, also a former Fiji national rugby captain, would not be going back to the military.

"Cmdr Teleni had resigned from the military to join the police and he is not going back. As far as the military is concerned, it is not paying Cmdr Teleni," he said.

Ministry of Information permanent secretary Sharon Smith-Johns told The Fiji Times Cmdr Teleni had decided it was time to move on and so he did. She said she did not have any idea where he was headed.

With the resignation of Cmdr Teleni as Police Commissioner, mandatory Christian worshipping and praying came to a stop at police stations.

Cmdr Teleni had combined Christian evangelism with his war on crime and condoned the start of weekly church functions that were mandatory for police officers.

His resignation was handed to the Office of the Prime Minister, said Ratu Epeli Ganilau, who's responsible for the Ministry of Defence.

A Ministry of Information statement said "Commodore Teleni, in his resignation, stated that he believed that he has made a significant contribution to the Fiji Police Force. However, it is now time for him to consider further career opportunities".

Joeli Baleilevuka is now the Acting Commissioner of Police until a replacement Police Commissioner is found.
