Hours after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government-backed Jan Lokpal bill was not tabled in the Delhi Assembly, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal resigned on Friday after remaining in power for 49 days.
"Today, my entire government has resigned. I can resign from the Chief Minister's chair a 100 times for the Lokpal Bill...We had our Cabinet meeting few while ago and decided to resign," Kejriwal told his supporters while addressing at the AAP headquarters here after his cabinet's last meeting was held in the secretariat.
Attacking the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kejriwal said: "The BJP and the Congress together defeated the Jan Lok Pal Bill. Both the parties meet every day behind a curtain and their real faces were revealed today."
The AAP supremo alleged that Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani is supporting the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government fort the past 10 years and even he backs BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
"Three days ago we lodged FIR against Mukesh Ambani. Ambani is running the UPA government for the last 10 years. He is also backing Modi for the past one year. How else Modi gets so much of money?" Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal on Tuesday said he has ordered to register First Information Report (FIR) against Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily, former petroleum minister Murli Deora and RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani for conspiring to inflate the prices of gas in the capital.
The FIR has been reportedly registered under sections dealing with criminal conspiracy, cheating and other sections of the Prevention Of Corruption Act.
Kejriwal said he will meet the Delhi Lieutenant Governor to submit his resignation.
"I will go to the Lieutenant Governor next and recommend dissolution of the assembly and to hold fresh elections here," he said.
The AAP supremo said his ministers have worked 'sincerely' for the past few days for the betterment of the people of Delhi.
"We have been working day and night since we formed government," he said.
"We are human beings and if we committed any mistake then please forgive us," he said.
Speaking on the works performed by his government in this short span, Kejriwal said: "The BJP and the Congress did not reduce corruption even after 60 years. We reduced it in just 45 days."
"They could not reduce power tariff in 5 years. We managed it in 5 days," he said.
Making a fairytale debut in the Delhi Assembly polls last year, Kejriwal took oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi at Ramlila Maidan on Dec 28.
He became the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi.
The just-over-a-year-old party led by Kejriwal emerged as the second biggest outfit with 28 seats, falling only a few seats short of the right wing BJP and allies who managed 32 seats.
The AAP formed the government with outside support of the Congress which had bagged 8 seats in the polls.
In the Delhi Assembly on Friday when the Delhi government went for a vote on the issue, a total of 42 members were against its tabling while 27 others, belonging to the AAP, were for it.
Following the voting, Assembly Speaker MS Dhir declared the Bill as "not tabled."
Amid chaos, Kejriwal had earlier tabled the bill in the Assembly.
Speaking in the Assembly, Kejriwal said:"This appears to be our last session in the Delhi Assembly."
"I am ready to sacrifice Chief Minister's post and my life for the country," he said.
In a major embarrassment for the Delhi Government, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung earlier wrote to state Assembly Speaker MS Dhir asking him not to table the Jan Lokpal Bill as it has not been approved by the Centre yet.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked Kejriwal to justify why he wants to present anti-graft Jan Lokpal Bill to lawmakers for their review in attendance of public inside a city stadium.
According to reports, Kejriwal earlier said he will present the Bill to lawmakers not at the state legislature but at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, where the special assembly session will be open to public.
The high court asked Kejriwal to reconsider the venue for security reasons and also to explain the justification for the stadium session.
The AAP supremo on Monday met the Delhi Lieutenant Governor here over the Jan Lokpal Bill issue.
He said that the Lt Governor has promised to consult the Law Ministry on the Bill.
"We discussed on Lokpal," Kejriwal said adding that the Home Ministry rule saying that central assent is needed is unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, the Lieutenant Governor has in his statement said that the idea of the Jan Lokpal Bill is right but the due procedure has to be followed.
"The Lieutenant Governor shares same values as Chief Minister to avoid corruption. The question is the need to follow procedures as mandated under the Constitution. Since the CM had written to the L-G indicating intent to introduce the Bill, the L-G had asked the Solicitor General to opine on the Constitutional validity," Jung said in his statement.
Amid ruckus, the Delhi Assembly adjourned for the day on Friday.
