The second half of the Winter Session of the Parliament began on a stormy note on Wednesday over the death of Arunachal Pradesh youth Nido Taniam.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, raised the issue of Taniam's death and said: "It is our responsibility to give them security. They are part of India and they fought China. How come someone attack him for his hair style. We must protect youths from all reasons."

"If the land on the banks of Ganga and Yamuna are India, so are the lands on the banks of Brahmaputra," said the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.

She said even two Manipur women were misbehaved with after the Nido Taniam issue.

Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering, who is from the Northeast's Arunachal Pradesh, also condemned Taniam's death and said even in text books there should be chapters so that people know about the Northeast people.

He thanked Swaraj for raising the issue and said the way of thinking must change.

Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav said: "The entire country should condemn it and it should be ensured that there is no discrimination. We need to solve this problem. This is important for the unity and integrity of India. We must condemn it here in the House."

Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP Basudeb Acharya also condemned it in Parliament and said the Northeast people are often attacked, raped and persecuted.

"This racial discrimination is continuing for years despite assurance of the government," he said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday slammed the state police for alleged 'slow probe' into Taniam's death.

The court asked the Delhi Police why they took over 15 days to get Taniam's autopsy report.

In what appears to be yet another violent attack on a member of the Northeast community, 18-year-old Nido Taniam, who was a student from Arunachal Pradesh and was studying in Delhi, died on Jan 30 from beatings by several shopkeepers in a market area of Lajpat Nagar in the national capital on Jan 29 evening.

Nido Taniam, had got engaged in an altercation on Jan 29 with some people in the market after he was teased for his hairstyle leading to a fight.

The glass of a shop had broken leading to more violence in which the boy was mercilessly beaten up leading to his death the next day. He was found dead in his room.

Activists alleged that police apathy also caused the death since though cops came but did not rescue him. He died of internal injuries, said reports.

The victims' friends were also there when the altercation occurred. Activists said police had brokered a peace first but then did not act. The boy was asked to pay Rs 10,000/- first but then why he was again beaten and left there was not clear.
