New Delhi: Pounding rains in the national capital for past week have flooded  major parts of low lying areas as the authorities are contemplating closure of  railway bridges over Yamuna if torrents continued.

A report said the water levels were nearly 40 centimetres above the danger mark of 204.88 metres.

The flood protection officials said on Tueday the railway bridges over Yamuna might be closed for precaution if the water level rose to above 206 metres.

This could affect trains to western Uttar Pradesh from Delhi. More waters were released from Hathnikund barrage on Monday, which might swell Yamuna by Tuesday evening. The rains continued to pour for sixth day on Tuesday.

The Delhi government set up over 160 relief camps to tackle the threat of flood. Mobile medical teams and water tanks have also been put to service to help affected people, who have been forced to come out of their dwellings in the low-lying areas, Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Rajkumar Chauhan said in a communique.

Over 50 boats, 68 divers and a unit of Disaster Management force have been deployed to meet any eventuality, the minister said.

The camps have been set up at Usmanpur, Badarpur Khadar and ISBT bridge.
