New Delhi: The local government on Saturday asked people living in low lying areas around the Yamuna river to move out immediately after the water level of the river crossed the danger mark following incessant rains for past 72 hours.

The waters of the river swelled dangerously, eroding banks on many areas and causing a possible flood threat to the low lying areas, official sources, who are monitoring the evacuation, said.

The water was flowing 11 cm above the red mark of the Yamuna river on some points, they added.

Many of the families living in the low-lying areas of east Delhi have been evacuated as the government was making arrangements for temporary shelters for the homeless. However, there were no immediate talks of distribting relief materials to the affected families.
