Police have identified the woman who died after a stolen vehicle collided head-on with another car in Auckland’s Manurewa last week.
According to a report by 1News, Monique Marie Jennifer Lay, 27, from Ōtara, died at the scene of the crash on Alfriston Rd on the evening of August 27.
The incident followed reports of an aggravated robbery on Greenmeadows Ave, where a person was allegedly threatened with a crowbar before a vehicle was stolen.
Police officers later spotted a vehicle being driven in the middle of the road without headlights. Police said inquiries confirmed it was the stolen vehicle.
"Inquiries later confirmed the vehicle was the one stolen from Greenmeadows Ave," Gray said, as quoted by 1News.
"Police signalled for the vehicle to stop. However, it failed to do so and took off at speed," as quoted by 1News.
At about 9.42 pm, the stolen vehicle travelled onto Alfriston Rd and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.
"Officers immediately rendered first aid. However, the driver and sole occupant of the stolen vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene," Gray said at the time, as reported by 1News.
The driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
Superintendent Shanan Gray extended police condolences to Lay’s family and friends, as reported by 1News.
"The critical incident investigation remains ongoing, and police are continuing to establish the full circumstances around what unfolded that evening," he said.
