A video has surfaced showing a car swerving onto a footpath in Manurewa, Auckland, nearly hitting pedestrians during a heated altercation. The incident occurred on the night of August 9, prompting a police response to what they described as "a disorder outside a Manurewa property." The New Zealand Herald reported.
The footage reveals a red car speeding onto the footpath, barely missing two people before a man strikes the vehicle with a rod-like object. As the scene unfolds, several men surround the car, escalating the confrontation. A black vehicle then emerges from a driveway, nudging the red car back onto the road before pursuing it.
In a further twist, a white vehicle speeds into the driveway with its door ajar, striking a man who rolls onto the ground. Despite the chaos, no injuries were reported.
Senior Sergeant Roelof Burger of Counties Manukau Central police confirmed that a report was received around 6:30 pm regarding the incident. According to Burger, two vehicles approached the address and threw bottles at the house, leading to a confrontation between the occupants and those in the vehicles. The vehicles left the scene, and no one required medical attention.
"Police spoke with witnesses present; however, there were no further lines of inquiry into the matter," Burger stated. He added that any new information would be reviewed for appropriate action.
Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councillor Daniel Newman expressed disbelief that the case was not being pursued further, describing the incident as "incredibly serious and disorderly." Newman emphasised that cars should not be used as weapons and urged the police to utilize the footage and any other information to make arrests.
"This is not normal, natural human behaviour," Newman told the Herald. "Certainly, the community would appreciate it if action were taken."
Police are urging anyone with information about those involved to contact them on 105, quoting file number 240810/4166. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
