A grocery store employee in the UK has been dismissed after intervening to stop a shoplifting incident involving Easter eggs, sparking debate around workplace policies and employee safety. Reported by 1News.

Walker Smith, 54, who had worked for 17 years as a shop assistant at a Waitrose store in South London, told The Guardian that the incident occurred during a routine shift when a customer alerted him to someone attempting to steal a display of Lindt gold bunny Easter eggs.

Smith said the individual was a repeat offender. When he confronted the person, he “grabbed the bag,” which tore during a brief struggle. The Easter eggs—priced at £13 each—fell to the ground, and the shoplifter fled the store.

He added that one of the chocolate bunnies broke, and in frustration, he picked up a piece and “threw it out of frustration” toward nearby trolleys, not at the individual.

Following the incident, Smith said he was reprimanded by a manager and apologised. However, the matter was escalated further. He acknowledged that he had previously been instructed not to intervene in shoplifting cases but said repeated incidents over time led him to act.

“It’s everybody from drug addicts to teenagers nicking bits and bobs or walking out with bottles of wine in their arms. We’re not allowed to do anything.”

Smith admitted he later regretted his actions, saying he had been “punching himself” and questioning “why did I do that.” Despite appealing his case in a meeting with store management, he was dismissed.

He also expressed concern about his future, especially after recently moving out and now living independently.

“My confidence is on the floor right now."

In response, a Waitrose spokesperson told The Guardian: “We take the safety and security of our customers and our partners incredibly seriously and to do this we have policies in place which our partners are aware of and required to follow.

“In reference to the point on guarding – we make absolutely sure that our shops have appropriate levels of guarding and this is constantly adjusted according to the level of risk.”

The spokesperson added that such strict policies are in place to protect lives.

“As a responsible employer, we never want to be in a position where we are notifying families of a tragedy because someone tried to stop a theft. Nothing we sell is worth risking lives for.”
