Two people suffered minor injuries after a teenager allegedly rammed three police vehicles with a stolen car during a dramatic incident in Canterbury on Tuesday afternoon.
According to 1News, police said they were first alerted to the stolen vehicle in the Bishopdale area of Christchurch around 2 pm.
Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, but the driver allegedly refused.
"Due to concerns about the manner of driving, road spikes were deployed in an attempt to safely bring the vehicle to a stop," he said, as quoted by 1News.
Police later managed to block the vehicle near the Rakaia Bridge on Main South Rd/State Highway 1.
"The vehicle was eventually successfully blocked on Main South Rd / State Highway 1 at Rakaia Bridge.
"During the incident, the driver rammed three police vehicles," 1News has quoted.
Two people sustained minor injuries during the incident, McDaniel confirmed.
The teenage driver was taken into custody without incident shortly after 3pm, as reported by 1News.
Authorities temporarily closed the bridge while emergency services responded at the scene. The road reopened shortly before 4pm.
