A Christchurch resident returning from Bali was met with a shock when a live snake was discovered in their suitcase, reported RNZ.

According to a report by RNZ, Biosecurity New Zealand said the reptile was spotted at the traveller’s home, coiled around the toe of a jandal inside the luggage. Trained handlers were immediately sent to secure the animal.

Wendy McDonald, Biosecurity New Zealand’s surveillance and incursion manager, said snakes occasionally slip through undetected, RNZ reported.

“Each year, we detect one or two snakes at post-border locations, with more typically intercepted at the border,” she said. “These are usually non-venomous and often arrive dead due to cargo treatment,” RNZ quoted.

The reptile is believed to be a wolf snake,  a non-venomous species of boa. Officials confirmed it will be euthanised as part of biosecurity protocols.

McDonald said swift responses are crucial to protect New Zealand’s environment and ensure unwanted species are not introduced, RNZ reported.
