India continued its impressive campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Day 5, with Sharmila clinching a gold medal and Sarvesh Kushare securing silver in their respective events, according to The Indian Express.
Weightlifting remained India's strongest discipline at the Games as Gyaneshwari Yadav and Bindyarani Devi added to the country's growing medal tally by winning silver and bronze respectively on Monday, The Indian Express reported. Their performances took India's total medal count to six, with five of those medals coming from weightlifting alone.
India's only medal outside weightlifting so far has come through para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar, whose bronze medal marked the country's first podium finish at the Glasgow Games, as reported by The Indian Express. However, the list of medal-winning disciplines could soon expand, with several Indian athletes progressing to the finals in track and field events.
Among the athletes to watch later in the day are Sarvesh Kushare in the high jump, Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Trivedi in the men's T38 100m event, and Tejas Shirse in the men's 110m hurdles, The Indian Express noted. India also has another opportunity to add to its weightlifting success, with Ajay Babu set to compete in the men's 70kg category later in the day.
The country's medal-winning momentum began on Sunday when Mirabai Chanu delivered a record-breaking performance to claim India's first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in the women's 48kg weightlifting event, according to The Indian Express. She also set a new Commonwealth Games record with her winning lift.
Earlier on the same day, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam earned a silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting event, giving India its second medal of the Games and reinforcing the nation's strong start in weightlifting, The Indian Express reported.
