Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has addressed the criticism directed at him following his imitation of Rishab Shetty’s performance from Kantara: Chapter 1. Reported by THE HINDU.
The controversy began after Ranveer, while enacting a sequence of divine possession at the International Film Festival of Goa (IFFI), referred to a revered deity as a “female ghost,” prompting strong reactions on social media from people who felt their sentiments were hurt.
Taking to Instagram, Ranveer clarified his intentions and expressed regret for the incident. He wrote that his act was never meant to offend anyone, stating, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s performance in the film.
Actor to actor, I know much it would take to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.”
He further added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
The incident took place during the closing ceremony of IFFI 2025, where Ranveer went on stage and recreated Rishab Shetty’s iconic climax performance from Kantara: Chapter 1.
While doing so, he mistakenly referred to the daiva Chavundi as a “female ghost” and even asked the audience if they would like to see him in Kantara 3. The remarks quickly drew criticism online, sparking a debate about respect for cultural and religious traditions.
On December 1, 2025, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) filed a complaint against Ranveer Singh for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
In its statement, the organisation said, “Ranveer Singh should issue a public apology and assure he would refrain from making such remarks or performances in the future,” while also urging supporters to protest “in a peaceful and lawful manner.”
Amid the controversy, Ranveer Singh is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Dhurandhar, which features an ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, and R. Madhavan. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film is set to release on December 5, 2025.
