A young goalkeeper with strong Punjabi roots has made her family and community proud after earning selection to represent the Southern Sharks at Australia’s Under-14 Junior State Hockey Championship.
According to The Tribune, Parineeti Mall, a 13-year-old from Melbourne, has secured a place in one of Australia’s premier junior hockey competitions, marking a significant milestone in her sporting journey.
Although born and raised in Melbourne, Parineeti continues to maintain a deep connection with her Punjabi heritage. Her father, Shinder Pal, is from Ludhiana, while her mother, Kamaljit Kaur, hails from Nawanshahr. The family migrated to Australia in 2009 in search of better opportunities and a brighter future.
Reflecting on the family's journey, Kamaljit Kaur told The Tribune:
“We wanted a better future for ourselves. Today, I work in the NDIS sector, my husband runs his own business, and our daughter is making us proud.”
Interestingly, neither of Parineeti’s parents comes from a sporting background. However, according to The Tribune, her talent and passion for hockey became evident at a young age, helping her establish herself as a promising goalkeeper.
Alongside hockey, Parineeti has also demonstrated impressive skills in soccer, showcasing her versatility as a young athlete.
Her dedication, discipline, and consistent performances have now earned her the opportunity to compete at the prestigious Junior State Hockey Championship.
Sports are not Parineeti’s only strength.
According to The Tribune, she is also an accomplished Bhangra performer whose energetic performances have earned widespread appreciation within Melbourne’s Punjabi community.
Speaking proudly about her daughter, Kamaljit Kaur said:
“She is a Bhangra expert as well. People often ask her to teach them.”
She added:
“But right now, we want her to focus on her studies and her game.”
Parineeti hopes to one day represent Australia at the international level and earn a place in the country's national hockey team.
According to The Tribune, she continues to train rigorously while maintaining an outstanding academic record.
Her ambitions extend beyond sports as well.
Speaking about her daughter's academic aspirations, Kamaljit Kaur said:
“She is academically very strong and wants to become a neurologist in the future.”
Her ability to balance academics with competitive sport has earned admiration from both teachers and coaches.
Despite being born in Australia, Parineeti has remained closely connected to her cultural roots.
According to The Tribune, her family has ensured she continues to embrace Punjabi language, traditions, and culture.
Her mother proudly said:
“You meet her and you will say she is a true Punjabi.”
She added:
“She speaks Punjabi fluently, loves Bhangra and remains deeply connected to her roots.”
Parineeti’s achievement has also been celebrated thousands of kilometres away in her ancestral homeland.
According to The Tribune, her maternal uncle, Manjit Bali, who lives in Nawanshahr, joined members of the Daily Morning Football Club in celebrating her selection.
Speaking on the occasion, Bali said:
“My niece has brought glory to our family and made us all proud.”
Daily Morning Football Club chairman Tarsem Lal also praised the young athlete's accomplishment, saying her success has brought immense pride to her parents while showcasing Punjab's talent on an international stage.
As Parineeti continues her journey in Australian hockey, her story serves as an inspiring example of how determination, hard work, and strong cultural roots can come together to create success both on and off the field.
