Police are appealing for the return of a stolen medication that could cause death if taken by someone who is unaware of its effects.
According to a report by Stuff, the liquid medication, Pentobarbital, is a sedative that can cause respiratory arrest and death. It is commonly used by veterinarians to euthanise animals.
The medication was inside a pink handbag that was stolen during a car theft on Athlone Rd in Auckland’s Glendowie overnight on Wednesday, September 16.
Police Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greaves urged whoever has the medication to return it immediately, warning of the potential danger.
“It’s likely the person has mistakenly taken the medication without knowing it was inside the bag, and we are asking for it to be handed in as soon as possible, as quoted by Stuff.
“Our main concern is that the person who took this item, or potentially gives it to someone else, does not know what they are in possession of,” as quoted by Stuff.
Police have carried out a number of enquiries in an effort to locate the medication, but so far have been unsuccessful.
“Police are actively investigating this matter and treating it as a priority,” Greaves said.
“If you have information on where the bag or the medication is, we need to hear from you to ensure it is safely retrieved,” as quoted by Stuff.
Police are urging anyone who knows where the pink handbag or medication may be to contact them on 105, quoting reference number 260917/4969.
