Hawke’s Bay parents are being urged to stay alert—but not alarmed—after a man reportedly approached a young girl walking home in Whakatu near Hastings on Thursday afternoon. Reported by RNZ
Detective Sergeant Karli Whiu said Hastings police are investigating the “suspicious approach,” which occurred around 3:15 p.m. The man allegedly began speaking to the girl as she walked home, prompting concern from local authorities.
Police commended the child for her quick and sensible response. “We acknowledge the girl who has done the right thing by avoiding the man, making her way home, and telling her caregivers,” Whiu said.
While acknowledging the incident may be unsettling for the community, Whiu emphasized that parents should remain vigilant rather than fearful. “We ask parents to be alert, not alarmed,” she added.
Police are encouraging parents and caregivers to talk with children about recognizing and responding to inappropriate or uncomfortable situations. “These discussions help children understand what makes them feel unsafe and take immediate action by removing themselves and informing someone they trust,” Whiu said.
Authorities are now reviewing CCTV and dashcam footage from the Whakatu area. Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity has been asked to contact police to assist with the ongoing investigation.
