A major police operation in New Zealand has dismantled what authorities describe as a nationwide drug importation and distribution network operating through the dark web.

According to a report by 1News, the nine-month investigation, known as Operation Solana and led by the National Organised Crime Group, targeted the alleged importation and supply of methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine. The probe culminated in coordinated enforcement action across Auckland and Hamilton.

Police executed 16 search warrants on Thursday and Friday, resulting in the arrest of 11 individuals. Officers seized significant quantities of illicit drugs, approximately $500,000 in cash, and three firearms, including a 3D-printed gun.

According to police, the group allegedly relied on dark web marketplaces, encrypted messaging applications and cryptocurrency services to conceal their identities and financial activities.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Hunt said the inquiry began after investigators identified a local syndicate allegedly using anonymous online platforms to facilitate illegal operations.

"We have established this group allegedly imported and distributed these controlled drugs across the country," he said, 1News has quoted.

Authorities revealed the drugs were shipped to New Zealand from the UK, Europe and the United States. In collaboration with New Zealand Customs and overseas law enforcement partners, including agencies in the US, Europe and the Australian Border Force, more than 200 kilograms of controlled drugs destined for the syndicate were intercepted at international borders, 1News has reported.

Additional quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine were seized during the execution of search warrants.

The 11 accused, aged between 24 and 42, were scheduled to appear before the Auckland District Court and Hamilton District Court today. They face charges including importation, possession and supply of class A, B and C controlled drugs, unlawful possession of firearms, and participation in an organised criminal group, as reported by 1News.

Hunt said Operation Solana demonstrated law enforcement’s growing capacity to identify and disrupt criminal activity conducted through encrypted and online channels.

"Offending on the dark web is not invisible," Hunt said, 1News has quoted.

"These arrests send a clear message: If you are importing or dealing drugs through the dark web, we will find you, and we will hold you to account," as quoted by 1News.
