A person has died after being struck by a train at Baldwin Ave Train Station in Mt Albert, Auckland, on Wednesday afternoon.
According to a report by Stuff, Police were notified of the incident at about 3.28 pm. The circumstances surrounding the death have not yet been confirmed.
Witnesses told Stuff the person was a student, although police have not confirmed this.
Poppy Curnow Booker, who was on board the train, told Stuff: “All I know is the train slammed on the brakes and derailed when the driver saw the student."
Passengers remained on the train for about an hour before being allowed to leave at around 4.20 pm, she said.
Another person near the station told Stuff they heard three or four “bangs” before emergency services arrived.
The train was stopped on the line on Wednesday afternoon, with police cordons surrounding the area. A tarpaulin was also placed along the side of one of the carriages.
A number of Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS) students were waiting outside the station to be collected, while headmaster Patrick Drumm was seen behind the police cordon. MAGS is a co-educational secondary school located on Alberton Ave, several kilometres from the station, as reported by Stuff.
At about 5.45 pm, police asked reporters to move away from the area, with an officer saying a body needed to be moved.
Auckland Transport said the incident resulted in cancellations on the Western Line, Stuff has reported.
Police inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are continuing.
