A person has died, and several others have been injured following a house fire in Christchurch on Thursday night.

Emergency services were called to a property on Whitehall St in Mairehau at about 8.25 pm after reports of a fire at the house.

Police confirmed one person died at the scene, while another person suffered critical injuries. Three others were left with moderate and serious injuries, and two people received minor injuries, as reported by Stuff.

“Sadly, we can confirm one person has died,” Superintendent Lane Todd said.

Todd said emergency crews remained at the scene late into the night as investigations continued, as reported by Stuff.

“Emergency services continue to work at the scene of a house fire on Whitehall Street in Christchurch,” Todd added, as quoted by Stuff.

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers also attended the scene.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said four ambulances, two rapid response units and an operations manager were dispatched to the incident, as reported by Stuff.

Police said a scene examination was ongoing and cordons would remain in place around Whitehall Street and Hills Road for the time being.

Members of the public were urged to avoid the area while emergency services continued their work.
