According to a report by Research Professional News, New Zealand has announced an investment of NZ$70 million to establish a new artificial intelligence (AI) platform under the soon-to-be-launched Institute for Advanced Technology.
The initiative is designed to strengthen the country’s research capacity and support innovation in a rapidly evolving field.
Science Minister Shane Reti confirmed that the funding will be allocated over a period of seven years. He emphasized that this commitment effectively doubles the amount of contestable funding available for advanced technology projects.
Importantly, the money will come from funds already earmarked for the institute, ensuring that no additional strain is placed on the national budget.
The AI platform will be open to competitive bids from researchers and institutions across New Zealand, fostering collaboration and innovation in areas ranging from machine learning and data science to ethical frameworks for AI use.
Officials highlighted that the goal is not only to develop world-class technological capabilities but also to ensure that AI is applied responsibly and for public benefit.
This investment signals New Zealand’s determination to keep pace with international advancements in AI while cultivating homegrown expertise and solutions tailored to national needs.
