A 23-year-old man has been charged after two people were left injured in a stabbing at the Pakuranga Night Market on Saturday evening. He appeared in the Manukau District Court on Monday with one hand bandaged, was granted interim name suppression, and remanded in custody. He is expected to reappear in court next month.

The man handed himself in to police at the Manukau Police Station on Sunday. He faces two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Police have confirmed they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

The assault occurred near market stalls around 6.45pm, prompting a major emergency response and leaving shocked bystanders at the busy venue. Photos and videos from the scene showed multiple police cars surrounding the area.

Inspector Danny Meade said police had received a report of an assault at the night market.

“Two people were located critically injured,” he said.

“Cordons are in place around Aylesbury St and Reeves Rd. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.”

He said police were “currently following lines of enquiry to locate the alleged offender.”

“Initial enquiries suggest this is an isolated incident and there is not believed to be any further risk to the public.

“There will be a visible Police presence in the area throughout this evening as enquiries continue.”

Hato Hone St John responded to the incident at around 6.50pm with three ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, and an operations manager. The victims were transported to hospital in critical condition, underwent surgery, and are now in stable condition.
