A large emergency response was underway in Taupō on Sunday after a significant fire broke out at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College, sending thick black smoke across the town and visible from the lake.

According to a report by 1News, Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it was alerted to the blaze at about 2.11 pm, prompting a multi-agency response involving volunteer and career crews from Lake Taupō, Taupō, Kinloch, Rotorua, Tokoroa, Greerton, Tauranga, Turangi and Kaingaroa.

Officials warned nearby residents to take precautions due to heavy smoke in the area.

"The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke. Nearby residents who may be affected by the smoke should close windows and doors. If you are concerned about your health, you can call Healthline on 0800 611 116," 1News has quoted.

Police were called to assist with traffic control around 2.15pm, and Spa Rd was closed for public safety while firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

In an evening update, Fire and Emergency said crews had successfully prevented the fire from spreading beyond the affected building.

"Crews have multiple hose lines set up and are attacking the fire externally from all sides of the building, as quoted by 1News.

"There is no indication of a cause yet."

Witnesses reported loud popping sounds as the fire intensified. Allan Goldsmith said he saw a column of black smoke rising from the direction of the school.

"There was a really strong smell of polystyrene, and there was what looked like burning polystyrene coming out of the windows, and the windows were exploding," he said, 1News has quoted.

"It was quite scary to see how quickly the flames started to spread along the building."

The school announced it would remain closed on Monday following the incident.

According to 1News, "School will be closed Monday, February 9, as a result of the N block fire. Please do not come on-site."

Taupō District Council urged residents to avoid the area while emergency services managed the scene.

"Traffic management is being put in place near the school, along with cordons to keep people away from the scene," 1News has quoted.

Taupō MP Louise Upston called the incident "devastating news".

"Thinking of all in the local community, I know our local fire & emergency services will be doing everything they can."

Nearby Tauhara College also shared support for the school community.

"On behalf of Tauhara College, we are sending aroha and support to all impacted," as reported by 1News.
