Five men have been charged following an incident at a mosque in West Auckland that left one man with head injuries.
According to a report by 1News, police were called to Masjid As-Salam on Akatea Road in Glendene shortly after 7 pm on Tuesday after reports of an altercation. Emergency services found a man suffering from head injuries, and he was taken to Waitākere Hospital in a moderate condition.
According to police, a 45-year-old man appeared in the Waitākere District Court on Wednesday, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Four other men, aged between 19 and 22, have also been jointly charged with the same offence.
Waitematā Criminal Investigation Branch Acting Detective Inspector Megan Goldie said the incident involved people who were known to each other, reported 1News.
“I can reassure the community that this is a family-related dispute and is not an incident where individuals have been targeted,” she said, as quoted by 1News.
Goldie added that investigators believe the altercation was linked to an ongoing disagreement between those involved.
“Police will allege that the incident has stemmed from an ongoing dispute between those involved,” as quoted by 1News.
Police inquiries into the incident are continuing.
