Police are calling it a “near miss” after fireworks were deliberately fired at officers and Fire and Emergency crews during a chaotic scene in Dunedin’s Castle Street on Monday night. Reported by Stuff

Authorities responded to reports of around 50 people shooting fireworks at each other when the situation quickly escalated.

A 20-year-old man was arrested for disorderly behaviour and released with a warning.

However, as officers returned to their vehicle, a group of men intentionally launched fireworks in their direction.

A Fire and Emergency (FENZ) truck was also targeted but escaped damage.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond condemned the act, calling it “stupidity” and warning that fireworks are explosives capable of causing serious harm.

Another 20-year-old was detained overnight and released with a warning the next day.

FENZ Otago District Manager Craig Geddes said such actions “endanger emergency responders and the public” and that the agency has “zero tolerance” for behaviour that puts lives at risk.

Castle Street, known for its student flats and parties, remains a hotspot for such dangerous celebrations.
