At least 23 people, including tourists, lost their lives in a tragic fire that engulfed a popular nightclub in Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed on Sunday.

According to a report by 1News, the incident took place just after midnight in Arpora, a major nightlife hotspot in North Goa that attracts both locals and tourists. Chief Minister Sawant stated that the majority of those who died were kitchen staff employed at the club, while three to four of the victims were tourists.

Preliminary findings indicate that the blaze was caused by a gas cylinder explosion and was later brought under control. “The fire occurred due to a gas cylinder blast and has been extinguished,” the Press Trust of India news agency reported, quoting local police. Officials further confirmed that “All the bodies have been recovered,” as quoted by 1News.

Chief Minister Sawant announced that the state government has ordered a detailed investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances of the fire and to examine whether the establishment was complying with fire safety measures and building regulations.
