Fire and Emergency NZ urges Diwali safety amid hot and windy forecasts

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) is urging people to prioritise fire safety during Diwali celebrations this weekend, warning that forecast hot, dry and windy conditions linked to El Niño could increase the risk of fires.

The agency is encouraging families and communities to take precautions when lighting fireworks, diyas and candles to ensure celebrations remain safe and enjoyable.

With weather conditions potentially increasing fire risks, FENZ advises people planning to use fireworks to check the latest weather updates and safety guidance before lighting them. Restrictions on fireworks may also apply depending on local conditions.

People can visit checkitsalright.nz for information on weather conditions and advice on reducing the risk of fire and injury.

For those celebrating with traditional diyas and candles, FENZ recommends keeping open flames away from curtains, furniture, decorations and other flammable materials. Candles and oil lamps should always be placed on stable, non-combustible surfaces and never left unattended. All flames should be extinguished before leaving a room or going to sleep.

Those planning to light fireworks are advised to avoid doing so in windy conditions and to choose a wide, open space away from buildings, vegetation and other materials that could catch fire. A bucket of water or a hose should be kept nearby, and fireworks must be directed safely towards the sky.

FENZ is also reminding the public to be considerate of neighbours, particularly those with pets and livestock, by informing them in advance about planned fireworks displays. Used fireworks should be soaked in water before being discarded safely.

The agency's message is clear: taking a few simple precautions can help prevent accidents and ensure that Diwali, the Festival of Lights, remains a joyful occasion for everyone.
