A car has crashed and a road has been damaged, following a burst water main in the Auckland suburb of New Windsor.

Watercare were notified of an outage at about 10.15 pm on Friday, and found the pipe burst outside 50 Boundary Road at 11 pm.

Police received a report of flooding and an unoccupied car that may have crashed as a result.

They notified Auckland Council and closed Boundary Road between Dundale Avenue and Kimber Hall Avenue.

Hundreds of households were estimated to be affected, between Donovan Street and Dundale Avenue.

Watercare's Rex Chou said it had excavated the pipe and isolated the damaged section by 2.10 am on Saturday, with supply expected to be restored to all affected properties late on Sunday.

Emergency traffic management was in place with a stop/go system, so vehicles could still use the road.

Watercare's priority was restoring the water supply, Chou said, and the cause of the burst was still being investigated.
