Auckland is set to get its second Costco store, with US-based retail giant Costco announcing plans to open a new outlet in Drury, a fast-growing township about 35 kilometres south of the city.
Property developer Kiwi Property confirmed the sale of a 6.4-hectare site within its new Drury development to Costco, marking another major step in the area’s transformation into a vibrant urban hub, reported RNZ.
“We are very excited to be entering into this agreement with Kiwi Property in a location as great as Drury,” said Chris Tingman, Costco’s Country Manager. While the exact opening date remains undecided, Tingman noted the store is still subject to “planning and corporate approvals.” He added that the new outlet aims to cater to members across South Auckland, Hamilton, and the Waikato region, offering Costco’s signature high-quality, low-cost merchandise, as quoted by RNZ.
Kiwi Property Chief Executive Clive Mackenzie called the deal a “major milestone” for the Drury development, which recently received fast-track consent for its first two stages. “Costco has been a hit with Kiwi consumers since opening its first store in Westgate three years ago. We’re pleased to bring Costco further south,” Mackenzie said, RNZ quoted.
The upcoming Costco will join other major retailers in the planned Drury Town Centre, following Kiwi Property’s earlier sale of 1.2 hectares to Foodstuffs, the operator behind New World and Pak’nSave supermarkets, RNZ reported.
The Drury expansion marks another milestone in Costco’s growing footprint in New Zealand’s retail landscape.
