Auckland is gearing up for a historic night of football as Auckland FC prepares to face Sydney FC in the A-League Men grand final on Saturday evening.

According to a report by Stuff, the championship decider, to be played at Go Media Stadium, marks the first time the A-League Men title match has been hosted in New Zealand. A crowd of nearly 29,000 fans is expected to attend the sold-out clash.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8.10 pm, with live coverage available on Sky Sport and updates beginning from 7 pm.

With thousands expected to travel to the venue, Auckland Transport is encouraging supporters to use public transport to avoid heavy congestion around the stadium.

Fans can travel for free on buses and trains by showing their match ticket to transport staff. Supporters are also reminded to keep their tickets for the return journey home, as reported by Stuff.

A dedicated “fan train” will leave platform three at Waitematā Station at 7 pm and stop at all stations en route to Penrose.

“It’s been fantastic to enjoy the real buzz around the city and beyond that Auckland FC has brought to us,” said Auckland Transport chief executive Stacey van der Putten, as quoted by Stuff.

“It’s going to be a big weekend for Auckland so we’re asking people to plan their trips ahead of time so they can travel smoothly”.

Stadium gates will open at 6.30 pm ahead of the highly anticipated match.

For fans unable to secure tickets, Auckland Council will host a free live screening of the game at Takutai Square in Britomart, where the area will be “transformed” into an “outdoor lounge”.

“If you don’t have a ticket to the big dance or just want to be part of the atmosphere, head down to Britomart and watch history unfold,” the Auckland FC website said, as quoted by Stuff.

Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and food, although food vendors will also be available. The public screening will be alcohol-free, Stuff has reported.

Meanwhile, football fans are also being reminded not to confuse Saturday’s final with the OFC Pro League game taking place at Eden Park on Sunday afternoon.
