Beloved community leader Laxmiben Patel passed away suddenly in Auckland on March 20.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, well-known community leader and accountant Kanu Patel, sons Rajesh and Ashok, daughters-in-law and grandchildren.

Born in Gujarat, India, Laxmiben moved to New Zealand at a young age. Throughout their married life, Laxmiben supported her husband in his business and was instrumental in helping it grow to a trusted accountancy and consultancy firm over the years.

She was an active member of the Auckland Indian community. She served as the president of the Mahila Samaj of the Auckland Indian Association at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre, where she worked tirelessly.

Hundreds of people attended her funeral service at Purewa in Remuera on Saturday 25 March, where eulogies and heartfelt tributes were paid to her by family and friends who spoke of her warm, kind and caring personality, her friendly disposition and willingness to help out in community activities. The last rites were performed thereafter according to Hindu custom.

Tributes said she was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, whether it was a neighbour in distress or a newcomer to the community. Her dedication to her community was unwavering, and her selflessness inspired those around her to follow in her footsteps.

Laxmiben was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished her family and was deeply committed to their well-being. Her love and support were the foundation of their lives, and they will miss her dearly.

In a message sent to the Indian Weekender, the Mahila Samaj conveyed the members’ heartfelt condolences to Laxmiben’s family and large circle of friends.

“Laxmiben was President of Mahila Samaj (sub-committee of Auckland Indian Assoc) from 1993-1995.   During her term as President she carried on the legacy of the pioneering Indian women who started the Mahila Samaj in 1971. Laxmiben was able to  retain and enhance this legacy and she will be remembered for her valuable contribution and her continued support to Mahila Samaj over the years,” the message said.

The Mahila Samaj was started by a few Indian women to promote and retain the culture, language and to celebrate festivals of India. This was for the benefit of Indian women who had arrived in NZ who felt alone and estranged from India and their families, and helped them to adjust  to life in NZ.

Over the years Mahila Samaj is now an advocate for Indian women rights, to promote women empowerment and a body that discusses many issues affecting women in NZ.

Laxmiben's sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to her community, her kind heart, and her infectious smile. Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched during her lifetime.
