In a landmark moment for Australian rules football, Jai Saxena’s selection by Collingwood in the Telstra AFL Rookie Draft has placed him on track to become the first player of fully Indian descent to play an AFL game. His drafting is being hailed as a significant step forward for cultural diversity and inclusion within the sport, Times Now reported.

According to Times Now, Saxena, raised in Doncaster East, Victoria, grew up in a household where AFL allegiances ran deep, although not always aligned. His mother is a staunch Port Adelaide supporter, his grandmother backs St Kilda, and most other family members cheer for Hawthorn. Despite the mixed loyalties, Saxena has embraced Collingwood wholeheartedly, proudly donning the club’s black-and-white colours since his selection.

His football journey began early, guided by his Delhi-born father, who introduced him to Auskick. Saxena’s talent rapidly flourished as he progressed through junior leagues and into the Oakleigh Chargers’ elite pathways program. His commitment was especially evident during a challenging 2024 season, where he focused on strengthening his skills and resilience ahead of the draft.

The Saxena family has long balanced their Indian heritage with their life in Australia. Their home is filled with traditional foods, cultural practices, and regular temple visits, elements that have shaped Jai’s identity and values. This cultural blend, he says, has helped him stay grounded while pursuing his passion for football, reported  Times Now.

As Saxena prepares for the next chapter with Collingwood, he acknowledges the broader significance of his breakthrough. He hopes his journey will inspire young athletes from diverse backgrounds to believe in their potential and pursue their sporting dreams. Despite growing excitement about his future, the teenager remains level-headed, juggling team commitments with school responsibilities, including an upcoming maths test, Times Now reported.

Jai Saxena’s rise reflects both his personal determination and the evolving landscape of Australian sport. His story highlights how talent, hard work and cultural pride can come together to create new pathways for representation in the AFL.
