Twenty-three people were arrested across Auckland over the weekend after celebrations following Samoa’s 34-6 victory over Tonga in a rugby league test match in Brisbane escalated into dangerous and unlawful behaviour, police said, reported Stuff.
According to Stuff, Tāmaki Makaurau Police monitored busy town centres in Ōtāhuhu, Māngere, Ōtara, and Clendon on Sunday night, areas where Samoan and Tongan fans traditionally gather to show their support. Officers reported large crowds and heavy vehicle movement as fans took to the streets to celebrate.
While most festivities remained peaceful, police expressed disappointment over several incidents involving “high-risk driving, people riding on top of vehicles, and sustained loss of traction.” Fourteen arrests were made on Saturday, followed by nine more on Sunday, as reported by Stuff
In addition to the arrests, police issued 204 infringement notices related to driving and road safety offences. “This behaviour is not only unlawful, it poses a real risk to those participating, spectators, and members of the public,” police said in a statement, Stuff quoted.
Authorities confirmed they will continue to investigate the incidents and have urged the public to report any unlawful or suspicious activity.
Police reminded supporters to celebrate responsibly, urging fans to mark future sporting events in a “lawful and considerate manner” to ensure community safety.
