The Bangaliana Multicultural Christchurch group marked a double milestone this year, celebrating the fifth anniversary of its Durga Puja festivities and receiving the 2025 Community Service Award from the Christchurch Community Board. The honour recognises the group’s contribution to cultural enrichment and community spirit in the region.

What began just a few years ago with a small group of families has now grown into a vibrant community, strengthened by the continued support of dedicated members. Preparations for this year’s event began months in advance, with every member playing a key role.

The celebration took place on 27 September. The day opened with sacred puja rituals led by the group’s pujari, including chanting of mantras, pushpanjali (flower offerings), and prasad distribution. The hall was adorned with colourful decorations, with the idol of Godess Durga standing tall and radiant.

Beyond the rituals, the venue was bustling. Vendors offered sarees, golgappas, and children’s activities such as art, crafts, and face painting. A bouncy castle and a surprise fire truck visit added extra excitement for younger attendees.

Guests were treated to a traditional Bengali bhog lunch featuring khichdi, labra (mixed vegetables), papad, jalebi, and gulab jamun. The food evoked a sense of home and was warmly received by the community.

The afternoon showcased multicultural performances from South African, Indian, New Zealand, and other cultural groups. Lively music and dance reflected Christchurch’s diversity, while the beats of the dhaak, the traditional Bengali drum, had the crowd dancing with infectious joy.

The day concluded with the visarjan (symbolic immersion of Godess Durga) and the vibrant Sindoor Khela, where married women applied vermillion to one another in a display of devotion and sisterhood.

Organisers described the event as a memorable celebration of culture, community, and connection. With gratitude to all contributors, the group now looks forward to making next year’s festivities “even bigger and better.”
