RNZ has reported that the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) recently took part in a US-led wargame designed to test strategies for potential future conflicts in space.

The exercise, known as the Schriever Wargames, was conducted over two weeks at an Air Force base in Alabama.

It brought together defence forces from 10 nations, including members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, to simulate scenarios involving both enemy and allied forces in space operations.

According to the US Space Force, the wargames explored how militaries might adapt to space technologies that are yet to be developed, preparing for challenges that could arise in future security environments. The NZDF contributed to the planning of the exercise, underscoring New Zealand’s growing role in global space security.

RNZ noted that New Zealand joined Operation Olympic Defender, a US-led space security coalition, in late 2024. The move aligned New Zealand more closely with international partners working to safeguard shared interests in space.
