Two police officers were bitten and another narrowly avoided being struck by a vehicle during a violent incident in Lower Hutt.

Police said the confrontation unfolded late on Thursday night after officers were called to reports of disorder in the area. When they attempted to speak with a man involved, the situation escalated quickly.

According to authorities, the man became aggressive and bit two officers as they tried to restrain him. During the struggle, another officer was nearly hit by a passing vehicle, narrowly avoiding serious injury.

The officers suffered minor wounds but are receiving medical treatment and support.

The man was eventually taken into custody and is expected to face multiple charges, including assaulting police.

Police described the attack as “serious and unacceptable,” stressing that assaults on frontline staff would not be tolerated.

“Incidents like this highlight the risks our officers face daily when working to keep communities safe,” a spokesperson said. “We are fortunate the outcome was not more serious.”

Police added that while most interactions with the public are peaceful, situations can turn unpredictable, putting both officers and bystanders at risk.

The accused is due to appear in court in the coming days. Authorities said further charges may be considered as the investigation continues.
