The taxi driver killed in the early morning crash on Symonds Street, Auckland was identified as 29-year-old Abdul Raheem Fahad Syed.
The Indian High Commission confirmed that the person involved in the crash in Auckland was an Indian. The office is in touch with the family of the deceased and trying to help them during this stressful time.
The accident happened at 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, December 23.
It is believed that Syed was on his way to pick up passengers when a speeding black Mercedes ran a red light and rammed his Toyota Prius. The taxi was hit on the driver side and Abdul at the scene of the crash.
Symonds Street remained closed this morning between Karangahape Road and Newton Road, following a fatal crash.
Two occupants of the Mercedes car fled the scene after the crash but were later tracked down with the help of the members of the public, police and Eagle Helicopter.
The 20-year-old driver of the Mercedes vehicle would appear in Auckland District Court on Wednesday, December 27; Detective Inspector Scott Beard confirmed media earlier today.
The 20-year-old was charged with excess breath alcohol, driving causing injury and failing to stop and ascertain injury.
Abdul hailed from Chanchalguda suburb of Hyderabad, India and was on work visa working for Discount Taxi in Auckland.
