An Indian Air Force helicopter with Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat on board met with an accident on Wednesday near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, the IAF said, as four persons were killed in the mishap that happened reportedly due to low visibility due to foggy conditions.

The status of Gen. Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat was not known. An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

There were a total of fourteen people on board, according to sources.

“An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the IAF tweeted.

The Chief of Defence Staff was on his way to the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington near Coonoor.

The town includes a Wellington Bazaar, and the Wellington Cantonment. The Wellington Cantonment is home to The Madras Regimental Centre (MRC) and The Defence Services Staff College (DSSC). The Nilgiri Passenger train passes through Wellington, which also has a railway station.
