Incredible India - the international tourism campaign of the government of India to promote tourism in the country – hosted a road show in Auckland’s Cordis Hotel, on Thursday, April 18, with an intention to target the increasing number of resident New Zealand travellers who travel overseas during winter months.

It is notable that with the onset of winters in May more Kiwis fly away, preferably for warmer shores, outnumbering the total number of visitors coming inland to New Zealand.

In May 2018 about 249,900 New Zealanders headed overseas for travel, up 16,800 from May 2017, with preferred destinations of the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), Fiji, along with our Trans-Tasman neighbour Australia, clearly suggesting an opportunity for the Indian market, only if, it can cater to the expectations of Kiwi-travellers.

Meanwhile, Incredible India’s Auckland roadshow was part of its broader Oceania strategy of attracting travellers from Australia and New Zealand.

Earlier two roadshows were also held in preceding weeks Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney.

Incredible India is positioning India as a ‘Transformative Destination’ for travellers from New Zealand and Australia.

In recent years the Indian tourism outlook has looked very promising with an upward trend in Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTA).

India received around 10.04 million FTAs in 2017 registering a growth of 14 per cent over 2016.

A total of 56,597 tourists from New Zealand visited India in 2017 registering a growth of 11.2 per cent over 2016.

An officer from the office of Incredible India’s Singapore Office G. D. Bairwa told the Indian Weekender that the target was to continue recording an upward growth rate in international tourist arrivals over the next 3 years through a multi-pronged approach, including proactive marketing strategies in partnership with the tourism stakeholders.

India commits to offer world-class tourism experience

Speaking at the event Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism said, “India is an experiential destination with its kaleidoscope of ancient culture and heritage, ancient systems of healing like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Naturopathy, natural beauty including 70 per cent of the Himalayas and over 7500 km long coastline, rich flora and fauna, world class medical facilities and many other aspects make India the favoured destination for the discerning traveler.”

The Ministry of Tourism has also taken the initiative of identifying, diversifying, developing and promoting nascent/upcoming niche tourism products. These have resulted in the development of unique products like Rural, Adventure, Eco, Wellness, Golf, MICE, Medical and Cruise Tourism.

Lately, several theme-based schemes for the integrated development of circuits for improvements of infrastructure in the country have been launched by the Ministry of Tourism to enable tourists to experience the destination fully.

India has introduced e-Visa, to facilitate foreign travellers visiting the country. The e-Visa facility, now available to the nationals of 167 countries including New Zealand, valid for entry through 25 designated Airports and 5 designated seaports, has contributed to the increase in Foreign Tourist Arrivals to India.

The Ministry of Tourism is also taking safety and security of the visiting foreign tourists seriously and have launched 24x7 Toll-Free Multi-Lingual Tourist Helpline in 12 international languages.

This helpline, available on the existing Toll-Free Number 1800111363 or on a shortcode 1363 for dialling in India, offers assistance to callers during times of distress while travelling in India and if need be alert the concerned authorities.
